Just curious as to what your thoughts would be on boiling water for fish tanks. I think it goes without saying that you would have to let it cool first =-)

I dont think it would really do anything man... the issue with tap water is the total dissolved solids (TDS) in it such as metals... Its really not the "bacteria" thats in water we are worried about... I am newer to the subject of RODI water but check with AzDesertRat

What are you hoping to achieve? Boiling water will kill any bacteria, but that's what chlorine/chloramine is added for...so I don't see any benefit there. Otherwise when you boil water most of the contaminants and dissolved minerals will stay in the water...the vapor that is produced will be fairly pure (there are still some things that will "cling" to the molecules in water vapor)...but you won't be able to capture enough vapor to do anything.

Unless you were using some sort of enclosed system collecting the vapor and condensing it it wouldn't do you much good. In fact it could make the water even harder that it was already by boiling off water and leaving solids behind, such as calcium. Less water with same amount of solids means it is more concentrated. So if you do collect the steam and cool it to condense it that water would have little to no solids. However, that is a lot of work when you can just run water through a unit if it is available. If not, some lfs will sell it or you can acquire it other ways if you are in a pinch.

The reason for RO/DI is to remove the TDS or dissolved solids. When you boil water you actually concentrate the dissolved solids and make it worse since the pure wate ris boiling away and leaving the crud behind in the pan.'
Distilling the water by capturing the steam and condensing it is better than boiling but some contaminants can evaporate with the water then get put back in with the captured water. Still not as good as RO/DI.

RO/DI passes water through a sediment filter to remove large particles and colloidal materials, then through carbon to remove chlorine and volatiles, then through a semipermeable membrane fabric that removes particles down to 0.0001 microns and finally through a cationic and anionic blend of resins which electrically trap or attract the remaining contaminants for ultrapure water. There really is no substitute.

It is not a replacement for a RO/DI and will not give you 0 TDS water. There are many many tests and reports on the Kold Steril filters and while they may have a place they are not the same as RO/DI.

Between the carbon and the poly pads they remove copper, heavy metals, volatiles and chlorine but thats about it.
