I have a problem with my blue hippo tang. It seems to be doing fine but the tail. The tail is the main problem I have. Every other fish I have in my tank is doing great no ich no anything. I have clownfish and a firefish. 2 peppermint shrimps and one cleaner shrimp. A few hermits a feather duster, pulsing xenia, button polyps. The problem is that my blue hippo tangs tail always breaks up . I don't know what is going on. I've used marcyn and it heals the tail. But, I already did it twice. And catching the blue hippo is really hard, so i try to avoid netting it causing more stress then leading to ich and other parasites. Does anyone have an idea to what is happening to its tail?

    Thank You!

Is the clownfish maybe nipping at the tangs tail? How long has this been going on with his tail? Make sure you are feeding the hippo plenty of nori seaweed and veg flakes, not just frozen mysis and meaty foods. A good diet and good water quality will go a long way toward keeping a hippo healthy.

Clowns can get territorial especially if paired up. Does it look like physical damage or disease?

My clown isn't paired does it still get territorial. And also I feel like its physical but I dont know by who. Can it be the peppermint shrimp or is it the clown. Cause I don't want to remove the clown it was my first saltwater fish.

You might also have an unknown "hitch-hiker". Did you put live rock in your tank from a local fish store or someone else's tank, or was it dried out base rock? It could possibly be an ill-tempered crab.

I don't think it's ur peppermint shrimp. If I had to guess, I would say the clown. My oscellaris clown is as mean as they come. I get attacked everytime I go near it.

Maybe the live rock has something I don't know of in it. Because anotherrock I bought from my LFS it had a spaghetti worm in it and a eucinid worm and also a pistol shrimp so yeah I am not sure right now. And does anyone know how to get rid of eucinid and spaghetti worms?

If I would have to guess, I would say the clown. Peppermints don't attack fish. They clean them. My clowns chase my hippo a lot. If the hippo is the same size or smaller than the clowns, he is getting bullied.

Also, what size tank do you have? Clowns are said to be more aggressive in smaller tanks.
