I have a blue hippo and have had him for about 2 weeks now. I seen him at the lfs in there tank for 3 straight weeks so im sure its healthy. But it wont eat the algea sheets that i have but will eat anything else flake, frozen brine, mysis and pellets. Was woundering if there was anything that i could give him as far as greens. Iv read that they need algea of some sort to live healthy. any ideas??

There are multiple brands of sheet algae and varieties. Have you tried red instead of green and what brand are you using?

I use Julian Sprung Sea Veggies.

I use omega one green sheets and my tang tears them up. Also they make veggie pellets for algae grazers. My Foxface loves the pellets

I had a yellow tank when I lived up north and he ate both..

I got a yellow tang a week ago and he is eating the green as I have not purchased the red yet.

That is interesting though and will have to see what happens with this one.

Yea we'll see how things go i guess. I will have to try and find the red and maybe some other things to try.

How big is this hippo? What a lot of people don't know is that hippos start out life being primarily planktonic feeders so it might not recognize algae as food yet.

mine did not take to it right away either.. Would eat Romaine like it was going out of style.. You could try soaking in garlic. Sometimes that helps things along, and to be honest you should do that anyway. Hippo's can be ick magnets and this will help its immune system. good luck!

Mine eats the nori sheets (sushi seaweed wraps same thing but 1/10 the cost). It doesn't nearly go for it as much as my yellow tang does though. Try romaine lettuce and see if he'll go for that. When I switched from romaine to nori my yellow tank wouldn't touch it for a week.
