black sand and live plants

    I'm planning to start my FW 60 g tank with thick layer of black sand, plants and no other concentrate. will it work with australian rainbow fish, and what type of plants should I get?

    sand in a freshwater. hhhhmmmm that sounds cool!! plant wise id say definatley live. they are sometimes cheaper and always better for your tank. as to what kind of live plant i would say just about anything you like since its a pretty big tank.
