I am thinking about getting an 8 gallon biocube and putting a small mantis shrimp and some low light corals in. Can the two coincide with each other? I may take the hood off and use LEDs. Any risk of the mantis jumping out? If I just have him and some coral do i really need a skimmer? I figure a large amount of rock would be good enough since it will be just him.

    Thanks in advance.

I would think with just coral and a mantis it should not be a problem with no skimmer. If you were worried you could use Purigen, GAC and GFO. Don't know about the escape abilities of the shrimp.

I actually run purigen on all my tanks as well as medical pads. I prefer to spend the money on new pads and purigen than risk another Cu issue or have something die due to poor H2O quality.
