when i started my 34 gallon red sea max i got a biobag of media that i have kept underneath my circulation pumps. now my tank is almost 2 years old and i have 25 lbs of live rock. i was told that this media can be a haven for nitrates after a year or so. is this true? do you think i should just leave it in there for or is it unnecessary now. thanks.

Just clean it in the waste water when you make your next water change.

Yeah I would certainly clean it out in a bucket of salt water when you do a water change. I honestly would replace a 2 year old biobag since it could have a lot of detritus accumulating on it which will eventually break down to nitrates if you've never washed it out. Do you have any other means of filtration besides the LR? Some type of physical filtration is always good to have to keep the water clean of particles.

i have a filter sponge the water goes through on its way to the skimmer and then the pumps, but sometimes i don't have it in there because it plugs up since i'm fighting a green hair algae problem. i think maybe i will just take the biobag out. my live rock should have enough nitrifying bacteria by now. if you disagree please let me know. thanks guys.

I would take it out if you have the skimmer running. What are your nitrates at now?
