Bare with me for Im not sure how to word this. How does the wet/dry manufactures determine the bio chamber size for tank size i e how many bio ball does it take to properly clean, say 20 gallons of water and how do you equate the for other media such as LR (rumble)

I cant answer it all, but I know they go by surface area on the bio balls. thats why it has so many points. And I think you mean rock rubble. But you are supposed to have 1 lb rock per gallon of water. less rock means more bio balls.

It all depends on your bioload in the tank rather than size of tank. BB are just media for bacteria to adhere to which breakdown ammonia to nitrite and then to nitrate, so the more fish the more bacteria you require, this bacteria will use any surface to colonise not just the BB, so the bigger the tank the more surface there will be on the sand and rocks and BB aren't that necessary.
