bio balls under water do any good?

    have a area in my sump reserverd for a fuge/dsb but in the short term could i use bio balls under or floating in that area and would it do anything or do they need a wet/dry area to work.?

    Bacteria will still grow on it, so it WILL make SOME difference, but in an ideal environment, high oxygenated water "wet/dry", there will be MUCH more bacteria.

    If you have enough live rock you don't need any bioballs at all. Are you not using live rock in your display tank for some reason?
