So should I remove the "Bale" from my skimmer? I've heard they can be a nitrate factory...but then why does the manufacturer put it in? Thx!

    Hi Jacwil
they are put in as they can help create an extra area for biological filtration
and provided they are rinsed/ cleaned to remove any accumulation of sediment periodically they dont become a problem

Ahhhh...I see. Well I'm glad you said something because my skimmer has been running for 3 weeks now and I haven't rinsed it or cleaned it yet (bale)...OY! I can just rinse it out in TW rt?

I was wandering the same thing. I want to put my heater in there but don't know if I can put it in with the bio media. What can you put in there besides the bio media

    Yep

Don't put a heater into the biobale. It might melt. Some people temporarily put filter floss in there. Some people put carbon or phosphate remover in there.

Yea there's no way Jen is gonna want to stare at another tank...I'm gonna do my time with this one, and in maybe a yr or 2, go larger. I was running carbon in my mechanical filter for a cpl weeks for preventative measures when my nem found filter intake but stopped running it now.

So you ALWAYS run it? Not just "now and then?"
