I’m in the planning process of breaking down my 90 gallon fish tank, removing the sump from the cabinet, moving the tank, and putting the sump in the basement. I need a new return pump that is quite and strong enough to pump roughly 14 vertical feet. I don’t know the exact name of the one I have now, but it’s obnoxiously loud, and the manufactures sticker on it says that it can lift 11 foot, at 700 GPH. I wouldn’t be concerned on the noise of the sump, other than the fact that it will be directly under our master bedroom in the basement, and the wife would kill me otherwise.

The reason I’m moving the fish tank is due to poor planning when I first set it up. The tank is only supported by one beam in the floor board that runs parallel to the tank, and moving it to the side wall in my office so that the weight of the tank is supported by 3 floor beams perpendicular. The reason I want to move the sump to the basement is because my 9 month old son likes to open the cabinet doors and splash around in the sump...

I know what you’re thinking, "why don’t you just lock the cabinet doors so that he can’t get into the sump?" Because that’s too easy and I need a project:) AND if anything were to ever happen, and the my overflow sporadically fails, and the sump overflows with water, then it would all just fall on to the concrete floor of the basement, and not through the wooden floors, preventing mold and mildew.

I’m sure that I’ll have many questions when this idea come to fruition, so any other ideas, comments, questions and concerns are always welcomed. Thank you in advance!

How large is your sump? Will you be using your return as a source of flow, or will you have enough with powerheads? Internal or external?

my sump is roughtly 30"L x 15" W x 18" tall. the pump i have now is external, (im not opposed to internal if need be) and my powerheads are more than ample for the turnover rate required.

I've heard good things from the Reeflo Gold series. What you can do is mount the pump to a piece of wood and put some insulation under it or sit it on some unseals to dampen vibrations.

Id ask ComputerJohn. He has a 90 and with the sump room underneath, but I think you've seen his build thread.

It might be on a bit expensive side, Id go with an Iwaki pump with a Japanese motor, like this.
