I ordered my ro/di filter this morning (Spectrapure proPLUS). Currently, my 55g tank is using straight tap water. What is the most ideal way to switch the water, through a series of weekly water changes over the course of a few weeks or is there a better method?

One factor to be considered in my situation, I will be tearing down and moving the tank within the next couple weeks, after I have the r/o system.

I am open to all advice and suggestions.
    Thanks!

Just stick to your normal water change routine and you'll be alright.:)

Yep, just jump right in, there won't be any issues, only good results.

I have that exact same unit and tank size. I love the ProPlus, great unit. I was also using tap water with marine stress coat for the first month of my tank.

Yes, you would start using your RO/DI water for topping off & regular water changes. I did my normal 5g a week WC. I make a 10g batch of water per week 5g for top-off & 5g for the water change. It takes me about 1.5-2hrs to make 5g with the unit. You'll want to get it working at 50+psi at least, anything under will not be optimal for the unit. My psi is about 55 or so. You'll also want to check your waste to pure ratio and trim the flow restrictor accordingly. Just read the manual over and follow the directions on it.

You might want to get a phosban reactor on your tank to lower the PO4 that has most likely built up in it from the tap water. I run a Two Little Fishies 150 Reactor and am currently running Chemi Pure Elite in it, my PO4 is at 0. http://www.bigalsonline.com/StoreCa...y=phosban reactor&queryType=0&hits=12&offset=

Also buying a handheld TDS meter would be a good investment as it will let you know accurately when your membranes need to be changed. I use the HM TDS3 http://www.tdsmeter.com/products/tds3.html

    best of luck!

I don't think you could bring on better conditions too fast. You can change salinity, calcium, alk, pH too fast--but with a new RO/DI system, you're only removing pollutants. This couldn't be a shock to any livestock, IMO. Nice going! :)

get a fan blowing across the water to increase evaporation and do more top off with it.. or just do a bunch of small water changes.. You will like what you see..
