many people do run cannister filters on salt water tanks - but as you have already gathered, if they are not maintained properly, cleaned/ rinsed regular, they can cause nutrient issues at a later date
the build up of waste in these units can result in high nitrate levels

another disadvantage of these units is when using the spray bar attachment, which is great for creating surface movement, but later in the tanks life , you will spend a lot of time using a toothpick trying to remove the coralline algae that clogs the holes

Berlin system style tanks - rely mostly on the rock for the biological filtration , bacteria colonises the rocks ,surface and in the pores and good water movement, circulation using power heads or other pump devices to push the water around the tank and thus deliver nutrients to the bacteria
general guideline is 1.5 - 2 lb of rock to every gallon of water - a more practical term is 30% or so of your tank is rock work.

the above combined with a good/ efficient, skimmer is the basis for many reef systems

the cannister could still be employed as they do make very good devices for incorporating any chemical media you want to use in your system, Carbon etc - but again comments on spray bar still apply - great when you 1st start, but a pain later on

if you have a sump, look at incorporating a refugium, Live sand and Macro algea etc, as this is often a good upgrade to a Berlin system tank and further help to reduce nutrients

I have run tanks up to 60 gallons using cannister filter and holding biological media, sintered glass rings, coral rubble etc - but did 10% weekly water changes and every week, rinsed the baskets in the old tank water as part of my maintenance routine

I was going to run a canister, but ditched it in favor of individual carbon/phosphates reactors. I am happy ;)
