Well everything should be here in the next couple days. I have seen people put there base rock on pvc pipe. what else have you guys used or should it be right on the glass. My only concern about the pipe is creating dead zones. I was looking at a tank the other day and they had clay pots - [ the red one that are for plants and a glass pop bottle ] they all had algee on them and looked great. This is my first reef tank and I want it to look and work the best I can make it.

I use egg crate. you could use pvc pipes but thats alot of cutting and time taken to place the rocks on it.

I don't see any point to putting a base down. IMO, it's just a way to create pockets of dead zones. It is completely unnecessary.

Put the rock right on the glass. If it falls, the substrate will protect the bottom.
