so i was on youtube today and actually stumbled upon multiple videos of aquariums made of plywood with a front glass panel and i was wondering ig anyone else has ever hears/seen/made one of these before because it does seem like an interesting cost effective way to make a custom sized tank etc

i saw tanks anywhere between 200 and 1500 gallons....heres the build video for a 237 gallon tank

If you can afford $2000 for lights, $800 for filtration, $1200 for supplimental equipment, $1000 on live rock, sumps, pumps, plumbing etc etc, you probably aren't going to stick it all in a DIY homemade wooden aquarium!!;D

    Ahh...fresh water is so affordable....

lol just saw it as interesting...i wouldnt really see it as being practical for a reef tank but itd be kind of cool for a fish only or FOWLR...to make it into a large shark/ray tank or have some other fish that do get really big

There are several people on this forum who have made them.

There is one simple rule... the bigger the tank, the more cost effective it is.

I personally love some of the plywood tanks. They can be made to look much nicer than a traditional glass tank IMO. Also, you can actually put glass on any side you want. 1-4 sides. This can be a great benefit to save money.

i figured on super big tanks it is more cost effective and i figured the same thing about the glass but that adds to the cost....just an interesting idea...sounds cool maybe someone will post up a picture of theirs

I saw a picture somewhere, a guy built a 8x4x4 plywood tank and put it in his wall and trimmed around it. Looked clean, and he had 4 foot of depth! It was a reef and it had the biggest mushroom garden I've ever seen. I can't remember what he used to light a tank that tall, maybe that's why he only had shrooms at the bottom lol.

Do it! Lol. That's where plywood tanks seem to fit the bill the best, doing an in-wall setup.
