This may be a tough one. So I read somewhere that it was possible to take the serial output from the Aquacontroller Jr and use a serial to bluetooth adapter to give remote access from a bluetooth enabled bluetooth computer using Aquanotes. Although I was able to get this working I was limited to about 20' in distance from the tank.

So, I decided to take another approach. I purchased a serial to ethernet adapter (rs232 to rj45), found a spare wireless bridge I had (802.11 wireless lan), and figured I could figure out the rest. I did get the Aquacontroller to connect to Aquanotes on my laptop with this setup last night. But I'm unable to send or recieve any data. This tells me I'm most likely using the wrong wires from the rj45. There are 8 wires to pick from, coming out of the rj45, that can plug into the serial connector. Does anyone know which wires to use?

Post here and Ken or Curt will answer. Not much up to date on Jr's as I use a ACIII Pro and it has Ethernet.

I've been e-mailing back and forth with Curt on this issue for a bit now. He thinks this serial/ethernet adapter might work, but it hasn't been tested with their equipment. I just love being on the bleeding edge.::)

There are many protocol converters that will convert serial output to IP. I have no experience with the AC JR., but I do have experience with some protocol converters. I use the Systech IPG series in the petroleum industry, where serial transmissions sometimes need converted to IP, BUT there must be a piece of software at the other end to capture the IP data and emulate a serial port.

For example, you would attach the protocol converter to your serial device. You assign the converter an IP address. With the systech, for example, com1 on the converter could be 192.168.1.10:8001 (8001 = com1 on the converter). You would pass this through your firewall, and NAT 8001 to private IP 192.168.1.10, so then your public IP (x.x.x.x:8001) would carry your serial communication. Then a piece of software at the other end would emulate a serial port (com5, let's say). The systech comes bundled with a piece of software called NativeCom. When you load the software, you specify which com port you want the remote serial port to be on your PC. So you plug in your public IP and specify the remote com port on your serial converter. So, now, on your laptop or PC, you would specifiy x.x.x.x:8001 = com5. Now, com5 is an emulated serial port, which parses the data through IP, and tricks your PC into thinking it's a local port. So, if the AC JR. has a piece of software you normally use to connect directly, use it to communicate with com5. Then it will read data across the internet, thinking you're directly connected.

Zach, this is pretty much the idea I'm going with, it's just a different company's product. I'm pretty sure their product comes with software for com port emulation, if not I already have some loaded (I was using it for something else I was playing with). The only issue I'll have is that the serial output on the Aquacontroller is proprietary, in that the tx and rx pins are the reverse locations of most rs232 applications. But there is software to correct that, or I can just make a crossover cable. Anyway, thanks for the input, it's very much appreciated!
