I'm tossing around the idea of possibly using a Hydor Slim-Skim (the larger 65g rated model). I haven't been able to find any information on the optimal water height needed to run this skimmer efficiently.

The skimmer is 17.5" tall. I would like to try this unit in a sump.

I've never heard of the skimmer. Sounds like a good possibility for smaller tanks. Good company.
