I'd like to use a salinity probe as a backup for the auto top off in case the floater gets stuck. My thinking is if the salinity goes down the controller will switch off ato. I am looking at reef keeper a well as apex. I understand RK has had issues in the past with their salinity probe but a new one is out. Anyone using it. Any problems? Are there any other brands of salinity probes that will work with RK? Does apex have a salinity probe and how well does it work? Thanks in advance.

I had a salinity probe for a couple of months and Ghent sold it. Neat gizmo, but for me it was really useless. Better, quicker reading with the refractometer. The pinpoint salinity monitor is slow, I don't know about the apex. It seems like it would not be the best thing to prevent a catastrophic event. Is your ATO hooked up directly to your RODI unit?

No I have a 10 gallon tank. I also use the refractometer for salinity. I wanted the probe only for detecting a change in salinity. When you say slow, do you mean takes a while to set up and use or that it takes a while to register. Mine would be set up permanently in the sump waiting for a change.

Are you thinking about the pinpoint one? It takes a while to register. It's not instantaneous. But maybe if you have it on 24/7 it is different. And it is extremely hard to calibrate. It's a tiny screw on the back of the unit, and you can't see the display while you are turning the screw. If you do get the pinpoint monitor, be sure to get the A/C adaptor, as the batteries don't last very long in it.

I think the pinpoint is a stand alone monitor? I'm looking at the digital aquatics that can be run through a controller (or something similar for apex). With the controller I can set it to turn off ato if SG drops. I'm not even worried about calibrating as long as it's stable.

They have one but have had some issues. On and off the market. Not sure about the one they sell now.
