i just took the practice cpat test today and i have my actual test in march. i have gone through the hiring process before and made it to the very end and was cut. they were hiring 7 that time and i was 1 of 9 that made it to the end so this time i wanna make it. so im looking for anyone who is a firefighter or knows about this process that might be able to give me some advice to better myself through the oral test and interview. any help would be appreciated.

Hope it all works out for you. I've been doing it for 5 years now, and couldn't think of another job I'd like to do. I wish I could tell you more about the hiring process, but when I went through it, my department was between chiefs, and everything seemed to be messed up at the time. I only had to take the civil service exam and a FEATS test, and they used the score off that to determine the hiring list. Now they do a full interview that is actually part of your score.

    Good luck!!

I am both a volunteer and career firefighter and had to take test and interviews for a few years before I got hired. Are you looking to get hired on a city department? I would suggest just practice interviewing with family and friends. Google it, there are plenty of practice interview questions for firefighters out there.

Good luck and let me know if you need anything.

hey thanks everybody. this is something i want so bad. i kinda waited too long in life but i had alot of things going on in my life that needed to be taken care of before i went into a career that i would love only to mess it up. the last time i tested it was different. before they only graded my written test and had to pass the cpat now they grade the oral exam and combine the oral and written and then determine if you get an interview. so needless to say im a nervous wreck. gotta get this job. actually i will get this job, im determined.

I am a firefighter (Driver Engineer) 12 years with Palm Beach County Fire/Rescue in Palm Beach County, Florida. There are many books out there to help with the oral process. Every process seems to look for different things. Some performance, some situational, some text book, some what they want to hear. How about someone that works for that department. People (other firefighters that work there) are usually very helpful in letting you know what they (their department) is looking for. Just ask you would be surprise how helpful they can be. Good luck.
