all depends on what type of lighting you have. also i would wait as long as possible before adding one. 8months-1year

Your clowns dont necessarily need anything... they are not dependent upon the anemone, they use it for shelter and protection, in the wild. Chances are that it might not even care for it, natures weird like that. So picking out one that will work is a little harder. lighting and water params need to be optimal, and you need to research a little more before taking the plunge, imo.

    They dont necessarily NEED anything.
they will chose what to be hosted by. just because a nem is in the tank doesnt mean they will go to it...

i had a nice nem for a clown back in my old tank and the clown wouldnt go near it. its hit n miss for them to go to it.

The 8mo-1year thing is imo a bit of a myth. The important thing for an anemone is consitent quality of life. They need good lights & stabel water conditions. That is why alot of newer reefers have problems with them. Between moving things, playing in the tank everyday, dosing everything they see an add for & in general changing conditions cause alot of swings that can effect anemones. The best thing for anemone care is owner knowledge, research, and confidence in both your tank, and your ability to provide the needs that they require.

As far as what to have in the mean time, dont worry about it. I have 2 seperate pairs of clowns. One pair semi chills in a large frag of armor of god paly's, and the other just have a favorite rock they claim as thier own. An anemone isnt a requirement for them.

exactly, the time is just a bench mark because, if you care about the hobby enough, in that amount of time you should be getting to understand the science behind whats going on in your tank.

if you have previous exerience, you can put a nem in almost immediately after cycle. its not recommended but its just saying that within that time, your tank should go thru some phases of algae, salinity, and any other swings that you can see, fix, and prevent. THAT is what nems need, no fluctuations.

Its always a possibility. clown fish do what they want, as do most of the critters in a tank. youll see... the best thing to do is just let em be, if they're happy with a nem, then great, but they might chose a powerhead, or rock, or hell anything. they're hard headed. lol

Imo the 8months-1yr is not a myth. Even the most experience reefers tank goes through many swings in the first year. That first year is to dial the tank in and make it stable. Not every tanks the same and there is always something different you have to do to make it stable. Putting a nem in after the cycle is cruel and a waste of money.
