I, as most, know the typical life cycle of a captive anemone. I have a pair of Sebae clowns that are lost without their nem ....hes been gone for 2 weeks. What can I safely substitute it with? Frogspawn, toadstool ....any others? Whats best (generally speaking)?

PS...Props & karma to Robman, for the great discussion and info about anemones ....unfortunately, the last 3rd of the forum turned into vernacular debates. If you havent done so, read it.

Thanks 2in10 ....might I ask another? My clowns were very aggressive with "massaging" their nem. Will corals (typically) hold up to such activity as nems do? Which would be the most likely to?

The larger the coral, the better your chances of success, as each head won't be as annoyed by the clowns.

There's also some plastic products I've seen that are made to look like nems; I don't remember what thread it was in.

I personally would avoid Euphyllia coral, they can be sensitive to the physical aspect of hosting a clown and take a good amount of damage, possibly even lethal. Some clowns love big toadstools with long polyps and the toadstools are very resiliant from the abuse they take from the clowns. Of course you have to want a toadstool in your tank in the first place. :)

The tricky thing is that you can't ever ensure what your clowns will decide is going to be their next host, so you can provide lots of tasty options for them but it's ultimately up to them what they decide to call home. I've heard of clowns taking to patches of zoas, mushrooms, euphyllia, duncans....almost anything.

My Clowns love my Gold Crowned Toadstool. They seem to have a tough time deciding between it and my sabae so they bounce from one to the other most of the day.
