Well as some of you on the ASAP part of the forms no I got off duty yesterday and came home to my two little fish dying in my tank. After taking some readings I noted that everything was ok but my water temp was 84 (at 5pm). My yellow tail and Domino Damsel died aprox one hour after I got home. Well after doing a little sleuthing I discovered that that side of my house gets huge amounts of sun and like a ****** bag rookie I had been letting my fish burn up in the sun. I felt really bad but having discovered his lack of foresight I have found a new spot for my 30 Gallon tank. So now I get to take all the water out move it and start over. . . . R.I.P. I know its no consolation having lost these 2 fish, but its good that your recognised the problem before the tank was a full reef set up

in addition that sunlight could have given you some algae issues later on ( if nutrients where and issue and the spores where present in the tank)

Yes...yes, chalk it up to old adage; "live and learn". Don't beat yourself up over though, it can be very difficult to foresee all possible problems. It may be a simple solution of adding a fan to cool the water surface. Are there fans in the light fixture(s)?

Yes they do have fans. Are you satying I could put a little clip on can blowing on the water and that would help?

My 150G is right next to a window, but I have blinds and shade over it now. I also have black background on the back and the side of the tank to block out the light and the heat. The tank was better when it was in a different area of the house, but having it there wasn't possible after my house was remodeled.
Better to find out now though. Sorry they died, but damsels are very difficult fish to keep in a reef as they tend to harrass other tank mates, dominos are some of the most aggressive.

Yes that is an option or in the sump (if you have one). Your heater should be at 76-78 degrees and air conditioning will help. I meant to say earlier, I am not convinced 84-86 degrees would necessarily kill the fish. My tanks regularly get to 82 degrees. Do you have good surface agitation? Skimmers provide oxygen rich water. An big air stone in the sump is an option also. The temp could have deprived the tank of oxygen if none of the three things I mentioned were/are employed.
