If you have a reef set up, yes. A reef system should be between 8-12
If you have a FO or a FOWLR, I want to say that it really doesnt matter.

I keep mine at 11-12. I did mess up on my dosing for a bit and it got up real high and it bleached some of my corals that I had recently fragged. My levels had been fluctuating around that time. It was down to 5 and I was dosing borax and such to get it up. Then when I hit 10 I started back on kalk and I messed it up (double dosing). I tested my alk when I noticed a problem (about 2 weeks after starting back at kalk) and it was at 14.

It is best to keep it at a constant rate..and like said around 10-12. But again IMO if you keep it constant then the corals do well. I knew somebody who kept his SPS tank at 6 and his corals did well???? While someone else I talked to let theirs drop to 6 and he started loosing his SPS. So I think stable constant levels are the key

Hi, just to help you understand, the 7dkh you mentioned as in the ocean is a "true" reading for the ocean. The ocean is a, to say the least, a vast system capable of regulating itself and staying stable. It also contains the most diverse biology of sea life and so the 7dkh is what it should be.
In the small closed system we manage (our aquarium) we are putting things together that may or may not be in the small confines of our aquarium. We are usually keeping Mag and Calc in a range, but, our tanks have much more of a fluctuation than the sea would (barring storms). So, it is prudent to keep all our parameters to higher range of the range to avoid them falling out of range to the lower or below the lower limit, which is more of a detriment to the life we are keeping.

My tank isn't fully established yet but the dKH is at 18. Is this an emergency or will it work itself out without water changes ect.

oh also so far cycling damsel only with some live rock, although I would like to add some snails/shrimp soon.
