How can I tell if a live rock and all thats growing on a live rock is alive or dead? See I got a live rock yesterday and a special light for my tank... when I got home I turns out i got the wrong light.. The problem was it was late and no fish/pet store was open so I had to wait till today to get one. Im just not sure if Its just a base now or not. THANKS Jace:confused::-/

Are you concerned that your live rock died because it didn't have lighting?

If your just concerned about the bacteria on the lr, your fine. Light has nothing to do with that. If the rock had polyps, corals, algae, your probably still fine, 24 hrs without light is not that big of a deal.

Live rock is considered "live rock" because it has established the beneficial bacteria that aids in biological filtration. This beneficial bacteria (anaerobic) does not require lighting.

agree, even if it was out for a little bit, 30 min. give or take you should still be ok. The only real way to tell if it is lr is to see if you get ammonia or nitrite levels in your tank. (just for future reference)
