Steven Segal , knows a lot about it IMO

its a martial art that relies on the use of your opponents own energy and force against themselves , using careful manipulation, in order the momentum being generated is deflected elsewhere

its a great art to learn IMO
any martial art that focuses on kicks and blows, is not as much use, when the fight goes to ground (which most end up doing)

Aikido does teach some long and medium range techniques
but also teaches you how to deal in a wrestling type scenario

If you are looking to get into the martial art, I would check to see if there are any Hap Ki Do dojos around you. Very similar style to Ai ki do, as in the show and go styling. The only difference is that hap ki do is my more diverse, meaning you will learn how to defend yourself in close combat and on the ground. I've studied Hap Ki Do for over 20 years.

Thank you for the input, I have practiced aikido most of my life and am looking for some mental training. Depending on the dojo Aikido has some very diverse mental training and in our dojo we are taught that a "higher rank" or "the one that came before" does not really know more than the "beginning student" or "one who came after" , but has an obligation to be more observant of the situation, therefor the teacher is actually learning from the student how balance a situation and develops the lesson plan as they go depending on how the student behaves. Do you know the meaning (or have one of your own) of hap ki do? I have seen a little of something I thought was called hop ki do, is that a different art or just a different way of saying it? I'm assuming that ki and do are the same as in ai ki do, but you know what they say about assuming things lol

You know, I can't say I have heard about hop ki do. It may be another version. Hap ki do is a realatively new martial art, in fact in 97 when I received my first degree, I was the 7th in North America to achieve that level. I know that Hap Ki DO was taken from ai ki do. The same my be with hop ki do.

The translation for Hap Ki Do is "The way of co-ordinated power". The stone in the water analogy is consistantly used in the style of martial art.

"The way of co-ordinated power" I like it! In our dojo one of the first things we have a student do (for their first ranking) is create a definition of Ai=harmony ki=energy do=the way of their own, it can be really amazing to hear what some people say. Aikido is a pretty new art itself so anything from it is really new lol. Is hap ki do fairly brutal? What I saw of hop ki do was similar to aikido in ways, but was pretty "mean" looking lol.

This is EXACTLY why it's difficult to help newbies in saltwater. Switching from the role of student to teacher is more difficult.

I practiced Tae Kwon Do to black belt, but our school stressed all around fighting. Many of the instructors also studied other martial arts, and those were incorporated in classes as well as sparring. What would you do in an actual fight, your forms? The biggest lesson I learned was not to fight.
