How would you know how fast GAC depletes ever? GFO you can GAC not so much... Personally I pay attention. To my skimmer performance and water clarity. And test GFO, buti don't really know on the GAC for sure. I get sick of maintaining multiple pumps and reactors though, so do mix. I just use a small amount of GAC and GFO and change weekly, adjusting the ratio based on the above. I may waste some, but don't believe I waste significantly more than if using two reactors. I think if you changed them out less offten, that would be more likely, but it is easier for me to do all my maintanance together weekly than remember what to do this week and next etc...

I agree with you, If i have multiple pumps to service im more likely to put it off rather than just pulling out the one reactor and swapping the media really quick. only takes a few minutes when I run mixed GAC/GFO.
