Quick question. I should prob no the answer to this. But I'm getting a tank tomorrow and this will be the first tank I fill with my own ro unit and salt. I've always borrowed buckets with saltwater from the lfs for other tanks I've filled but I only have 2 5g buckets at home.
Is it ok to fill the tank with ro then dump the salt right in the tank? then after that put in live rock and sand? I'm not sure what the right procedure would be. Thanks in advance

Thats what i did, as long as there is nothing in there just water and salt, put a power head in there to mix it for ya and wait a day or so and you'll be fine. then add the sand or rock first if you want the rock on the glass, most ppl do. its up to you.

+1 if it's an empty tank, just have circulation and a heater in there so the salt dissolves evenly. And of course make sure to test it over the next few days.

I did this on my 180. filled it with fresh to leaktest then just salted that. then sand and rockwork. then fish. all in about 24 hours.

Seriously..... rock was from the tank when I moved it from arkansas. fish came with it.

So if I fill it tomorrow, could I put sand and rock in Sunday afternoon?

Yes you can, Sunday will be just fine.. If you wanted to add the salt tomorrow morning you could also add the rock/sand tomorrow night, not fish though..

Ok cool. Thanks. Ya no fish. I have pretty decent patience when it comes to cycling. I'm getting my first tank with halides so I'm pretty pumped. Ill start a build thread soon.

Just an idea for you. If don't want to have the potential of rockfalls and broken glass you may want to put a layer of egg crate down first before you add the rock and sand. This ensures that burrowing critters cannot undermine your rock work. What size tank and what set-up is it going to be? FOWLR, Softies, Mixed or SPS/LPS ;)
