A trip to Deathco, aka Petco

I went to talk to a buddy of mine that works at petco today. I noticed a Hippo Tang that didnt look very well. I looked closer and it had Ich, really bad. I have never seen it that bad before. Come to find out, It was a customers fish whose house caught fire and petco is letting his fish stay there. They didnt come i with ich according to my friend. He went and spoke to the manager to see if they would let him try to treat the fish. The manager said no, and said to wait until their "saltwater expert" come in later today. He still persisted cause the poor guy didnt look like he was going to make it much longer. He must have had probaly 30 or so cysts on just one side of him, I didnt bother trying to figure up the other side. After my friends persistence, the manager finally said, "Im calling him(the owner of the fish) and telling to come and get them." I was like WTF. So I went to the manager (which it turns out to be the asst manager) and told her those fish came in their healthy, and now they are sick because of "so called expert" does not know what he is doing, or you wont let him do things properly. That fish is NOT going to make it more then a day or 2 without treatment, which at this point, I doubt treatment will help it any." Then I went on to complain about ehir "expert", one of their setups had a green film on the surface and the only break in the film was from the return line. So we all know that water is not oxygenated very well. Come to find out, the skimmer quit working over 6 months ago, and has never been replaced. My friend went on to tell me about how the bulb for the UV sterlizer went out like a year ago, and has never been replaced. ALL of the tanks had red slime. green slime and covered with diatoms. My friend said they are not allowed to touch the tanks other then to sell fish, the rest is left up to their "expert". I think we need to look into petitioning Deathco about their animal cruelty practices.

Wow... No reason to apologize! That is ridiculous they would keep someone employed like that! Anyone could see that this is NO expert if the tanks are looking like that! I would be so pissed If I saw a store like that.

as a former worker of PETCO... BLAH!!! go figure, i was telling someone else about that. they stink. im not a disgruntled employee or anything (yeah i am) but they have no experts there. at least down here in miami. but anyway the closest thing to an expert is probably working in the small animals dept.

there are just to many things wrong with that place. in fact down here in miami they stopped the salt water section all together.... go figure

 

I feel about the same way. I went to a "new" petco last week to see what they had. Id never been to one, just petsmart, and this one opened like a month ago. I got a fire goby. The stupid "fish team leader" didnt put enough water in the bag so he just skooped water out of a FW bucket to fill the bag!!! I got to the front, not aware the water was fresh and got to looking at the poor fish. He was breathing hard, and swimming like crazy + the water was ice cold. That is what got me. So I went back and asked why the water was so cold, and they guy said, " oh that fish is tuff hell make it"!!! I asked what kinda water was in the bucket and he said, " I dont know" !! So I got another guys over there and asked him, and he said it was the left over water from the bags when they get new fish, the FW fish!! Needless to say the poor goby died in the bag. Ive never gone back. Ill dive to a good LFS before ever going back to petco again. The whole place is run by idiots. It suprizes me, more fish dont die in the tanks. Thanks for bringing this up. I was so mad that day I forgot to tell.

Gladly i dont have a petco near me. I dont think there are any in Canada. But there is one LFS that sounds exactly like that, cyano all over sick looking fish. They even sell rock with 50 to 75 aptaisia on them for 200$ they call them rare anemones. go figure... i dont even go there anymore cause i get pissed off.

yeah... P.E.T.A. loves petco... theygo and take pictures and show them to the world. we were always on PETA watch. till finally i said forget it and got a batter job. i just walked out. they tried to get me to stay, but i said no i am not working with this crap.

they only took care of the animals when someone from corp. was coming... the rest of the time, animals would go weeks without care.

Wow, look like everyone hates Petco!! Nice page Monkey!! Im never going back, I dont wanna support a place like that.
