Ok i was woundering how long is to long to have some of your water change water ciculating in a bucket?? I have had some in there for around 4 weeks with a pump running none stop and thats the only thing it has been used for is water changes (not the water out of the tank just what i need to put back in). Do you think it will still be ok to use for a water change??

If its regular mixed saltwater (with salt buckets) then I think you dont need to leave the pump circulating it. Now if it would be natural seawater then I think I read you need circulation 24/7.

I have the same question actually. I have had mine in the garbage can two or three months. Probably about 20 gallons (I keep for emergencies......as I don't do routine water changes). So we'll both watch this thread.......

i see this question quite frequently and it is to my understanding that unless something got in there to cause a cycle you should be fine. In the case of circulation, you should never let water just sit still. It needs movement, I would imagine it would become quite stagnant if it were to be still... But you should always test new water before going into the tank anyways, I think you will be fine unless there is something noticeably wrong.

If it's RO/DI water and pure, as long as it can't get contaminated, it doesn't need circulation. I keep mine in an airtight water jug for long periods (mixed with my salt).

If it's an open top container, the water will absorb ambient pollutants (from the air). Just a bad idea in general. Circulation or no. I don't think this happens over night or anything - just over time.

If it's not RO/DI, no telling what might be in there that could eventually decompose and kick off a cycle - sealed container or not. If it's treated tap, I'd only let it sit for a couple of days (even if it were sealed).

There was a thread recently discussing this too that I read... didn't find it to link over to...

I guess you can say, for the most part, it is a matter of personal preference... I really just don't like the idea of my water standing still waiting to be used, I feel much better just plopping a power-head for movement, but to each his own...
