Hi all, I'm new here,I have a 56 gallon tank that is currently set up as freshwater but will soon be turning it into salt. I just purchased a wet/dry filter for it and envy thing. My main question that I have is that currently my tank has 40 lbs of live sand in it right now,I've heard I can just rinse it and use it for my salt set up? But I have also been reading a lot of people say to use aragonite instead, if possible I would like to use the current sand I have but if it will save me problems down the road I will fork out money for the aragonite. Which is the best? Pros and cons? Thank you all for your help! :cheesy:

I think you should buy more live sand. If your sand is live in the fw tank, it won't be live when you change it to sw. Yes buying new sand would save you some time when it comes to cycling etc.

Sand or aragonite is a preference that needs to be read up on. It depends on what you want to keep! Some creatures thrive in it. I like the dsb. It seems as though there's a whole 'nother ecosystem in the sand. It just seemed more natural to me. I agree with Anldyxp, cycling used sand might be a pain and take longer. Someone else will have to write the benefits aragonite! Go slow and read, read, read! All the best!

Im planning on using the sand that I had in my fw tank, I never had any issues such as ich & never treated that tank/sand with anything detrimental like copper.

thank you for the all. but i heard about that the Aragonite comes from the shell and crushed coral which is not too easy to resolve in specific PH. if resolved, the product of resolving are the basic element of the salt water. so it will be good to salt water
