Trying to change up our current powerhead setup which sucks. We've got a 40g tank with 2 maxijet 1200 powerheads and they are obnoxious. 295 gph a piece doesnt sound like much, but the direct stream they produce is annoying and makes a mess no matter how they are directed. Would it be worth it to mod these in order to spread out the flow or would a better option be to replace them with 2 Koralias? We want alot of flow but not the wave pool the maxi jets are making. Any ideas?

With a 40 gal tank that's way too much flow. I had 2 Korelia 2's for my 65gal tank 36Lx18Dx24H and that was fine. I have 2 Korelia 2's and 2 Korelia 4"s on my 210 gal 72x24x29 and that is fine. Good luck!:)

Could we remove one and redirect the flow on the other somehow or would buying 2 new Koralias and ditching the maxis all together be the best bet? Even with one unless its aimed at the glass it creates a whirlpool and blows everything around like crazy. We heard that turnover rate of around 10x per hour was a good starting point for a reef tank and have seen tanks of similar size with the same flow numbers or more so the 2 maxis seemed like a decent choice.

Koralias are much better for producing wide chaotic flow which most coral like better than the straight streams you get out of maxijets (unless modded). How big the Koralia's you want are will depend what type of coral you are intending on keeping. If you want SPS I would aim for around 1600gph of flow in the tank, personally. If you aren't going for a lot of SPS you could get by with less but I wouldn't go under 1000gph if it were me.

We mostly have softiesbut might pick up a few sps in the future. Are we talking 1000gph overall or just from the powerheads? The maxis only flow 590gph together and they are totally obnoxious no matter how they are aimed.
