I don't think the paint would be an issue. It wouldn't be the most attractive after repeated cleaning, but if you used an enamel based paint, maybe that would mitigate that issue. Just an opinion, but I would be pretty confident that once dry, paint is inert and probably wouldn't pose a threat to your tankwater, but I may be wrong.

If you go ahead with the paint project, mask everything off well, and I'd cover the top of the tank too, to insure no paint gets on glass surfaces inside, to save you the work of having to scrape it off with a razor blade, and risking scratching the glass with the blade.

And I agree with the others regarding the leaking thing. Just make sure your tank is perfectly level. Use a nice long level, like a 4'--it'll be more accurate than a smaller torpedo level.

Bull! I had a AGA 90 for 13 years with no problems.
I always make my stands and canopies so they cover the trim so it does not matter what color it is.

Krylon fusion paint is a spray paint that once dry is reef safe. Many folks use it to paint PVC that goes in the tank. You could spray it, but you would need to be careful with masking it off. Brushing it works, but usually looks like it was brushed.

As to the stands, my 90g is an AGA, with AGA mission stand and canopy. If anyone has any doubt that the stand needs to be well built, they need to look at AGA's stands. Thses are built so cheaply, but I have yet to hear of a failure of the stand. When we build our own, we overbuild them, and that is fine as long as we have help moving them;)

wow. Horkn. I just finished painting it before your post and out of SHEER LUCK I used Krylon Fusion black paint! I think it will look great.

I have decided to go with the 90 and the 75 will be my backup. The homemade stand is bulletproof and I will make sure it is good and level. Thanks all for all of the insight!

luckily I didn't need to worry about fitting equipment under mine, so I designed it lower to the ground to make maint easier and strong enough to slide around the room if I ever need to without worrying about it collapsing.

For paint, don't know if it's been recommended but why not use rustoleum?!
