im trying to set up a tank and hide as mush equipment as possible
i dont know how to make a sump

    i want a
    sump
    refgium
    uv sterilizer
    skimmer
---kind of an all in one thing underneath the tank behind closed doors.....

also, id like to know if i should bother trying to drill holes or just put an overflow box on?

and last but not least.....i want the best lights, but i also want a full hood (ive had a lot of fish get out of tiny little holes in my hood)

i have a lame drawing that i made in the "paint" program, but i cant figure out how to load it and idk if it would even work to be honest

    Welcome to the club.

The most common sump design is to have the return pump in the middle of the sump, with a refugium to one side and the skimmer on the other(doesn't matter which one goes on which side).

Glass tanks, as long as they are not tempered(most tanks do not have tempered walls, just bottoms) are very easy to drill. I was nervous to drill at first, but it's actually pretty simple. I would suggest buying an overflow kit from Glass-Holes.com dope aquarium stuff. The 700gph overflow is probably best for a 75g tank. It comes with the drill bit and all you need(except for the drill. lol) to install the overflow on the tank.

Is this for a reef? I wouldn't recommend a UV steriliser for a reef tank.

    Welcome to 3reef

You would want to find the longest, widest tank that fits in your stand. You would then install baffles to make 3 sections. The first section would house your skimmer you would have 3 baffles here to help eliminate micro bubbles. The first and third baffle will be on the bottom of the sump and the middle one will be 1 to 1.25 inches above the bottom. All baffles will be the same size. The middle section will hours your return pump the last section will be your refugium. Water from your overflow will go to the skimmer section. To get water to the refugium you will put a tee in the line to the sump with a valve installed below the tee to regulate the flow to the refugium. The water flowing to the refugium should be very slow in the range of 1 times the refugiums volume per hour. You would install the sterilizer on a return line to the tank that you can control the flow through as the manufacturer recommends. You will need the same set up as with the overflow line except reversed. Sterilizers are not necessary.

Drilling holes for the return is the best IMO. Look at Glass-Holes.com dope aquarium stuff for help.

I would suggest making your own hood and using a retro fit kit of the lighting type of your choice.

i cant believe how fast you got back to me....idk the exact size of the tank since its not here atm, but its an older used 1 that i got so idk the kind of glass either....i heard sterilizers are good for tanks over 50 gallons.....i plan on having mostly corals anemones maybe 3 or 4 fish, like a pair of clowns a sand sifter and something else....but yea, deff. want a reef.......i would assume that i would use a 20 long since its the only spare tank i have for a sump....is that good enough???

ps, can you help me upload my pic? its just saved to my pc atm...

A 20g should work just fine as a sump. That stocking list sounds pretty good.

To upload an image, you can do so, directly from your desktop using the "Attachments" button at the top of the "reply to thread --> go advanced". The button looks like a paper clip. Brows images and hit accept.

You could also make an account in flickr or Photobucket. They will give you an IMG code to every picture you upload.. Copy and paste that code to your desired post(s).

    here is my refugium

I'm using a 20g long. If you have any questions about it, or how I did something, then just ask.

well the top [art is obviously the fish tank which has live sand and live rock in it, and my blue swaure wave maker, ha

as for in the stand...the pink rectangle on the right in a skimmer, then idk what i put in by the other spots....but im sure something goes there like bio balls live sand live rock sponges something....then the green square is the refugium

QUESTION: do i want 1 line coming down and 1 line going up for water flow or keep it with the refugium having its own line back up?
