i just started up a 10 gal reef tank. i did a 15 gal. water change on my 55gal and use the water out of it to fill the 10. I also used about 10lbs of extra lr from the 55gal. i put 30lbs of sand in it too, tho it isnt ls.
Is the new 10gal going to cycle still? or can i start adding to it slowly?

From what I have picked up over the couple few days. Is CYCLE, CYCLE, CYCLE! You will always have to cycle a new tank no matter what, becuase of the new filters every etc. So I belive yes, you will have to cycle even tho you got it from your old tank. But if you would like you can wait for a more experienced reefer!

I would let it cycle for a while. Give it time before you start adding to it. If it's only been up days (or hours even) I definitely would give it a bit of time. ( A few weeks to a month suggestively by myself ) My old 55 gallon I cycled for 3 months, and my current 75 gal i let cycle for 4 months. No problems whatsoever with either tanks. I have never lost a fish as well.

    Edit!!!

Sorry I reread that it was only a 10 gallon tank!!! Sheesh, give it a week or 1 1/2 week of cycling.

With the new sand, you will probably have a longer cycle...

i kinda figured the new sand would throw me off, but i tested everything and theres no ammonia nitrates or nitires. but then i might have not given enough time for a cycle to start... its only been up 3 days! i dont mind waiting tho i have my 55gal to keep me occupied! ;D

I would wait a month before adding anything and test every week to see if your levels start to climb and drop. Luna

your tank will probably go through a short cycle, the cycled water and lr will help speed things up, maybe toss a small krill or shrimp in there and let the bacteria break it down
