so today my wifey bough the fish i'v been eye-ing for a while, my LFS owners 4" yellow tang. the fish was ordered almost 2 years ago and arrived the size of a looney, about an inch across. he was never able to sell it and it has been living in a 25G reef display since. now i know thats no place for a tang and although my 55 is barely adequate will it continue to grow in its new environment or is it done growing and will be comfy? he settled in a matter of minutes and was pecking away at random algae in no time so it appears he is happy for the time being. other fish are 2 false percs, algae blenny, 2 cardinals and lots of inverts. 55G with 25G sump. please be kind...

I figure you gave him 30 more gallons so more power to you.....but officially I have to stay out of it as I don't want to be listed as an accomplice when the Tang-Police show up

Do you have some pics you can put up?

Coolness. Make sure you give him some Nori. Yellow tangs are great grazers though. Lots of personality too. I recently replaced my Sailfin with one, the yellow is much better at grazing.

i think you should be fine as long as that is your only tang, and one of your last fish, tangs put out a massive bioload but a 55 should be perfect for him as yellow tangs dont get too large, but your tank is a minimum in size for tangs movements. But your sump being almost half the size of your MT helps out a lot with the bioload because of the amount of water flowing through the system. Its faster to pollute a puddle then a lake.

not sure if there is such a thing as "endless supply" when it comes to tangs and algae.

I've got a yellow tang in my 55 gallon tank. I've got 2 other fish in the tank with it (flame angel and lyretail grouper). They get along very well and I have plenty of live rock to swim around. The tang seems to be doing fine with a fat belly. He gets nori and pellet food most days and occassionally some frozen food. I think your s will do fine based on my experience.
