New to this. I have a 300 gal tank I just bought a pump for this tank and I have a 30 gal wet dry filter box. I also purchaced a protein skimmer Red Sea Berlin XL Turbo Protein Skimmer with Pump. I see alot of diffrent typs of setups online. I have a pump room to set mine up in. I want to do this right the first time. what other equipment should i buy and how should i set this up? I want to have live coral hard coral and fish. Please some ideas or pics. the pump I bought pushes 3400 gal per hour and I have 2 overflows with 2 returns. this pump wont be to big will it?

That pump should be fine, you could probably go bigger if you wanted to. What are the dimensions of the tank? You will need good lighting and if you want to start off right, I would use MH on a tank that size. Depending on the dimensions, I would at least 3 250w MH or 400w MH. You could possibly need 4 depending on the size. T5s may work, but IMO, it depends on the dimensions of the tank. You will need good flow in the tank. A closed loop system may be your best bet, but if you don't want to go that way there are many different power heads on the market. My favorite is the MP40 by Vortech, but if you want to go a cheap route 4 or 5 Koralia 3-4 should do the trick. If you won't want to do SPS corals, then you could get away with less flow and lighting BTW. You will need heaters, I would several smaller ones then 1 large one. You will need a lot of rock, I would go with dry rock (my preference is Fiji, but it's been hard to come by as they have stopped exporting it). Dry rock is cheaper, you get more for your money and you don't get any unwanted hitchikers. I would suggest buying online such as from bulkreefsupply.com. Good luck with the tank.

You will also need test kits for ph, cal, mag, nitrite, nitrate, phos, alk, and ammonia. You could also get a portable refractometer too.

I think we need more information. A couple of pictures of the tank and the wet dry with dimensions would be a great help. Pics of the overflows would also help. With that we could help you better. I have a 210 gal reef tank so we're almost in the same ballpark. 3400 gph sump pump will work. Koralia now has new powerheads called evolution and they make a 1400 gph powerhead for about $50. Four of those with your sump pump would give you 10,000 total gph which should be good for soft corals or hard corals. Placement of the hard corals should be close to the returns or powerheads, softies can't take that direct flow so they should be positioned where there is less direct flow. Your eyes will train you.

What equipment do you plan on having in the sump? A refugium? The way you plumb can be affected by what you want in the sump area.

I would not bother with a Wet/dry. Get another large tank for sump refugium. With an equipment room you won't have a problem. A 75-90g should do you. I have a 60g on my 90g, but you would not have the room to fit stuff in.

There is no point. Live rock does the bio filter.... wet/drys require maintenance. How much live rock are you going to have?

W/Ds do have their place... mostly in the past or for fish only tanks.... for reef tanks you want fuges a good skimmer and lots of live rock.
