I'm getting ready to buy a 55 gal set-up with corals and a good livestock of fish. The tank has about 50lb of live rock with many polyps and soft coral growing on them and the reef is build at the bottom of the tank and does come up very much. I currently have a 30 gallon tank with maybe 40lb of rock that I would want to transfer over so I can sell my 30. How should I sack the rock and can I transfer the rock itself.

Yes, you can transfer the rock, don't worry about it being in the air, as long as it's kept damp, you should be fine. As for stacking, you can try epoxy to glue the rocks together or if your feel like drill the rock you can do that too, although that will be much more difficult with the rock in the tank. Make sure it's stable and you should be fine. You can lean some of the rock too on the back glass if you want.

...I did the same thing 30 to 55...now I'm at 90 : )... If ya can...set up your 55 were ya want it and have your 30 running somewhere else...Is your new tank currently running? regardless...you need to set it up and make sure its stable..a week? then start adding pieces from your 30 gallon 10 or 15 lbs at a time..over the course of a month or so...JMO...
..its my opinion that you should introduce everything to your new tank in this manner, slowly, bio loads and all.......but then again...someone might say "just throw'em all in and let fate handle it"... I dont subscribe to that.. : )
Good luck..dont forget to take some before and after...and during .. pictures : )

Yea the tank is set up now I've seen the progress he's made on it over the months but now I'm buying it and wanna make a couple changes. But as far as the coral goes, the rock that they are on must be on top and my not coraled live rock on the bottom?
Picture of my 30 now and pics of the 55 reef project will be posted soon

...I guess than, you will just have to do it when you do the move...sometimes you just gotta do what ya gotta do.....If done with care and concern...should be a breeze..do it all in one fell swoop...then let the dust settle... sounds like fun, I wish I could help. : )

How old is the 30 gallon?
