A few things in my tank haven't been looking their greatest, and after testing all my parameters I was curious about stray voltage. I went and got a multimeter and am reading around 3.5V. Is this enough to cause some coral stress?

    Thanks,
    Ivan

corals will actually grow faster in the presence of a current because the calcium binds to them easier.
But 3.5v wont do anything... just the ions in salt water usually register on my meter at 2 volts.

Ill take Dingo's word on the reading - looked like a typical ORP value to me LOL

from some reading up I have done on the subject
corals are not that badly affected by stray voltage
fish on the other hand can be as the current messes with their lateral line sensors
they get the same feeling they would if a predator was in the area

still researching this area myself so not 100% sure on all the effects
or at what levels voltage would start causing issues

    steve,
I had our company tank completely wiped out from a current of 43.3 volts

I am having trouble finding the "danger zone" myself..every article I have read hasn't stated a certain voltage at which you should start worrying. Fish are fine though so I guess I'm good.

So what would lower the volts...a ground probe in the sump?

Either that or trying to find the source and removing/replacing it

Where did you get your multimeter? Can you or anyone post a link so I know what it is, I would like to pick one up also and check things out!

    Thanks!
