So I recently bought a new heater due to my 2nd marineland taking a dump (not even the stealth model that was recalled) and bought a fluval with digital display rated for 60 gallons for my 55. We, it gets cold in my house when the heater is not on all the time. Moments ago thermostat read 61... Problem is my heater reads 73, it seems it can't keep up the wished and programmed 78. Should I get a bigger heater or a second heater?

Since that one is working, a second one of equal rating will do the job.

FWIW, a heater's tank size rating is based on it's ability to raise the tank's temp above normal room temp (usually around 70F).

Ahhh, well. What about if I just buy a new one with higher watt, say 250 rated for a 90 gallon. I recently bought a ro/di and will be picking up a mixing bucket. I will need a heaer for that and can use the current one in my tank. Would that work?

Its usually recommended to run two heaters on a tank, one set slightly lower than the other. That way if one fails you still have a back up. If I were you I would purchase 2 new ones (one more for tank and one for wc's). But it's up to you.

I run two in my tank during the winter months. This year has been really mild though, I rarely see the second one even kick on.

Having two running on your tank is a good idea. Most reefers do use two. I have always tried to use two. In my frag tank Im running 5 of them right now. haha.
