I'd go for which ever has the greatest width.

What brand of tank? I am closing on my house next month and my goal is to have a big tank like one of these next spring.

Id go with the 300. Much more surface area. This means you could have more rock work and more areas without rock. The 300 gives you about 25% more surface area (19 sq ft compared to 14 sq ft) .

Drive down to That Fish Place in Lancaster, PA and get you one! They had 2 when I was there last week. If I wasn't on vacation, I would've pulled the trigger on a 180 gal and a 75 sump!

At the OP, I would get the 265. I'm assuming the 300 gallon is 36" tall. If the 300 is 36" wide, go with the 300. Just make sure you understand the maintenance included with such a large tank. Flow is much more difficult. Skimming is going to be expensive. Water changes cannot be done on the fly anymore. Lighting will be hefty...etc. I agree with Whisky, width is better in every aspect when it comes to reefs.
