I have started to plan my 20L sump build. Skimmer on left followed by a 8" tall baffle then a 9" baffle that starts 1" above the bottom, then followed by another 8" baffle. Each baffle in the bubble stop area will be 1" apart. The center is the return area. Next is a 9" baffle for the fuge. The return pump will pump water into a "T". The left will put water into the tank and the right will slowly pump water through a UV sterilizer and return the water into the fuge.

won't the UV sterilizer kill beneficial nutrients for the fuge?

you need to split the overflow drain to feed the fuge. I would return the UV output to the tank directly or back to the return area, sending sterile water to the fuge is counter productive.

Ok, I think I may change the designs a bit, because I will be using vinyl tubing and not pvc. Besides that, how does it look?

Looks pretty good. But is there enough water room for when there is power loss? I know the 20L is 12" high.. So with 8" and 9" baffels is there enough room for the extra water from the DT?

looks just like mine, as long as you take proper precautions with the return line siphon break the 20L will hold the backflow from a 90gal tank with room to spare.

I am not sure how big your systems is but the way the sump is drawn your return section will only hold around 2.9 gallons even without a pump taking up space in it. Thats not a lot of water and will require either an ATO or lots of topping off. When I did my 30G sump thats the biggest problem I had too, the retuen required constant top offs until I broke down and bought a good ATO system. I evaporate as much as 3 GPD with my 100G system and it got really old really quick.

As far as backflow and room, my 100G with the returns 3/4" be;ow the surface flows a maximum of 3.5 gallons back to my sump so I always maintain at least that much room, actually I keep 8 gallons of freeboard since my skimmer works best at that depth and it gives me a safety cushion.

This will be running on a 75gallon RR. With the way my overflow is set up, only about 1 gallon makes it into the sump.

I think I will T the return and have the water flowing into the tank go through the UV and the other side going into the fuge. I think I will make the fuge a few inches smaller, that way the return section will hold more water. What if I make the fuge 10" and the return 9"?

I plan on buying the tunze osmolator as my ATO when I have the $.
