So I can pickup 2 x MP40's for $200 each, which I think is a pretty strong deal - my tank is 48" x 24" x 17" - would these be overkill? I realize you can turn them down, just wanted some thoughts.

    Thanks!

Recomended on echotechs site, for my 75 anyways, is 1 mp40 and 1 mp10. But yes you can turn them down. Go for it! and if you decided its 2 much ill give you $250 for one! lol

I believe at lowest setting, each pump still outputs 20%+ of it's rated max output.

If at times you'd need any less than that, you'd have to unplug pump completely.

Ecotech site says 1000gph - 3200gph. So with two, you'd have absolute minimum gph of 2000 unless you unplug.

The tank is 100% SPS, so my return will be a mag 18 throttled back which should account for 1100 gph @ 5ft, and if you have these turned down all the way to a combine 2000 gph, thats 3100 total for an 85 gallon, or 36x turnover. This would be low for an SPS dominated tank correct? I would be shooting for over 50 and probably somewhere between 50-100x from what I've read

    Thoughts?

MP10 + MP40 is what you want for your tank. I run 2xMP10esW in my 72 gallon bowfront and I can't turn them past half without making it looking like a tropical storm ripping through my tank
Just a heads up, two MP40 will be overkill for sure, but for that price why not!

You could get away with one MP10 is you didn't have a ton of SPS easily. Two Mp10 on minimum setting is probablly where you will end up...if you get two.
