when i set up my 20g 4 years ago with my little grouper in it my mom thought i was crazy putting a "grouper the fish she loves to eat" in a little tank, untill i let her watch me feed it a frozen mysis cube and it sucked the whole cube into its mouth and went back into its hole. after that she wanted to watch me feed it all the time. have you tried anything to get your dad interested in your tank?

Yea I tried, I asked if he wanted to come watch the corals eat. He said he could live without it. He's just not a guy who's into that kinda stuff.. he's into hunting and cars.. and anything that is greasy with an engine. haha just not his thing which is totally fine. I just don't like it when he tells me its a waste of money and all that.

haha that is funny. Cars are one of the biggest wastes of money known to man outside of strippers.

Passive aggressive. He knew it was your siphon tube; he's sending you a message. They keep you at home while you go to school so they know you aren't just having parties all the time, but the bit about living without seeing your coral eat because it's a waste of money, really says it all. If you had a degree and were living on your own, they'd probably show a lot of interest in your hobby. But so long as you're living under their roof and eating their food, a saltwater aquarium just looks like a white elephant their helping subsidize.

I say this because it isn't the first time I've seen it. Those who maintain saltwater tanks while living in someone else's basement, always leads to resentment and recrimination. He cut up your siphon because it wasn't really worth much, was easier than a direct confrontation, and ultimately sent the message.

The message? Do something else. :D

That sucks about the siphon, as for parent things mine just like to call my tanks bait tanks and my dad asks when we can go fishing. I just laugh and roll my eyes at him, both of them know its a hobby and they do enjoy feeding the tanks every once in a while, my mom loves the tanks to the point I have to tell her to take a hike because I'm trying to sleep. The only Issues i have to worry about is if they flood or break and ruin the carpet or the wall then I have to fork the money which i expected. Lucky for me the 46g tank is acrylic so no breaky there.

A hobby is a hobby and none of them are a "waste of time". I've been working on, modifying and racing cars (legal forms) for 10 years. Photography has been in my life for 2 and aquarium keeping for much shorter. They all bring equal yet different trials, tribulations and enjoyment to the table. To say one's love or passion is a waste is to say so from your own subjective and narrow field of vision.

One man's trash is another man's treasure; or, in this case, one man's passion is another man's waste of time. :) Happy reefing.

oh my he's not that mean no way. He wouldn't ever do it on purpose, they dont like despise my hobby they just don't really support it very much. And plus I pay for everything with my tank its not too much of an inconvenience for them. but he knows I wont just do something else :D

haha yea they are kinda the same way, hes not like MEAN and he doesnt say like oh its just a big waste of money in a rude way he just kind jokes about it, and he really does think its a waste of money haha but... you know whatever..

I agree a hobby is a hobby :) whatever it may be if it brings you happiness its not a waste of money.
