So here is the deal - I've got about a $1000 budget for a new system. I don't really want to have the display tank bigger than a 55 (Simply as I want to be able to move it empty by myself :). So here is what I'd call deal breakers:

    1) Reef tank - the display tank must look sexy! Glass or Acrylic.
    2) Nice looking stand, preferably black (matches my nano :)
    3) I'd rather have nicer, longer lasting gear than lots of cheap stuff.
    4) Metal Halide lighting, or whatever would be comparable for corals stony or not
    5) a largish sump (Heck I'd even run a 55 display and a 55 sump)

    Thats about it.

My goal then would be to get said system, and setup a complete beginners guide to putting a tank together from the ground up, and taking a step by step approach.

I've been out of the hobby for 15 years, lots has changed. Your input is much appreciated.

    Thank you 3Reefers!

Being one that has a 55 gal.I would sugest going with a 75rr same as 55 but more room front to back(only a few dollars difference..this way its easier for you to aquascape..thats why im upgrading to a 75bow..also if your good a DIY stuff you could save cash by building your own stand for a fraction of a store bought one..

If you're not looking for bigger than a 55, I would say go with a 40 breeder. Nice and wide, gives you a lot of flexibility with aquascaping.

I say go bigger now while you have the money/chance, I have a bio 29 not even up and running yet and im already looking for a bigger tank, just knowing I want one, how limited I am with 29 gallons.

I agree with the forty breeder for a tank, nice dimensions. As for lighting, MH will cost you some money if you want decent lights and ballasts. You can look for used, but I would look at 150w pendants. If you have a canopy, you can do a retrofit kit and that will save some money. As for the tank, i would check craigslist. For a sump, I would suggest a 20gal. long, but if you want bigger, go bigger.

+1 on the 40B - many more options for aquascaping than the 55.

might want to look into one of the DSA neo's instead of a traditional 55g if it could float your boat
