+1 on the generator. Besides your reef tank there is your fridge, freezer, lights and a couple fans to stay cool. We are set up with enough back up power to run the house including central air and heat.

100 MPH winds are I believe cat 3 hurricane force. That could down trees and possible structural damage to homes.

    Good luck,
    Rick

Hope u pull through good luck worst case if u have to just keep scooping and dumping water wiith a bucket or container to keep it oxygenated and wrap blankets around the tank to help insulate it.as for how long it can go...dpends on how heavily stocked you are.I was wayyyyy overstocked and my fish didnt last 5 hrs :(

Borderline Cat 1/Cat 2, but still enough to do damage - more in the realm of downed trees and powerlines than anything else. Generator and battery powered air pumps are the two first choices. Another thing you can do if you're in a pinch is to get a power inverter for your car. I believe you can get them up to 180 watts and they should be available at a variety of local stores. That will power a decent sized circulation pump. Also, if you get a generator, make sure you get a few 5 gallon gas cans. Not fun making a bunch of trips to a gas station for 5 gallons a pop.

You are right, went and took a look at the cat ratings. 100 MPH wind falls in the cat 2, 96 to 110 MPH winds. You would think I would know living on the coast and having been in a half dozen storms up to cat 3.
    Thanks,
    Rick

actually, they are sold in upwards of 2000 watts or more. go check out some of the truckstops in your area like Flying J or Pilot. I had one I sold to a buddy years ago that was a 5000 watts peak with 2500 steady. he used it in his Semi to run his fridge, TV and at times a small microwave.

Ok i found it. Book is Saltwater Aquariums

"Adding Hydrogen peroxide to your aquarium at a dose of 1 teaspoon for every 50g can significantly elevate oxygen levels in your aquarium for the duration of a power outage(you must repeat every 6 hours)"

    Good little tip there.

Where are you coming up with 100mph winds? Are you talking about the possibility of a tornado hitting you're area?

Go get yourself the biggest UPS battery backup you can afford. These can be found at Staples, Comp USA, Walmart? Etcc... Computer specialty shops in you area will have the biggest ones. For less than $300 you can get one that will easily run powerheads and heater for 12+ hours. Obviously significantly more without the heater. Cheaper than a generator and if it doesn't come back by the time it dies you can bring it to the nearest friends house, McDonald's or some other BS retail store with power to charge it up.

your going to have to to find a way to keep your tank moving with flow, that is your best bet
