Tangster, I bought a CPR and you are right what a PITA it was and I paid a fortune for it too, tried everything to get it and keep it going,
ever seceded. Someone told me that they are notorious for having air leaking through the seams.

Then I bought one from Aguatraders, paid 30 bucks for it and 12 for a Aqualifter pump and haven't had a problem since. As for draining,
your right not as good as drilling (as far as I have been told) but its doing a pretty good job for me.

As far as the fuge being separate from the sump, I am in the process of changing mine from a combo sump/fuge to two separate boxes
    mostly due to Tangsters posts.

    Thanks Tangster!:)

Thats why I started to build my own design and it is one of the better ones that anyone ever used.. I made one for a Friend in N.J 180 gal tank with a set of Little giant MDQ 5 and it handled them just fine.. When I came along if you could not make or build you did not have it :) the Junk only hit the slatwater market once they smelled money at some elses expence..Mine are cheaper and way better..

Yep see a refugium is just going to become a fugly nasty looking saltwater marsh/swamp. And I see all these people trying to make a silk purse out of that pigs ear I just laugh! A healthy and well running fuse if a mess to look at No need for Rock and animals other then what pods and sand fauna that comes naturally to them. they are what they are a swamp period end of story..And the alga's don't care whats hold the water for them. I have set a a fuge with a old salt bucket for a guy its still up and running about 8 maybe 10 yrs now same grasses I gave him to seed it with are still alive and being harvested on a regular basis. Its a 90 gal tank full reef .

so the refugium should just sit a little higher than the sump at an angle so it can overflow into the sump and there should be a return pump into the main tank?

Not at any angle level will do but you have to drill a hole up near the top rim of the fuge then add a bulkhead and then a shoirt stub of pipe to make sure the water from the fuge goes into the sump. The level inside the fuge is dictated by a 90 and a stub of pipe and then in the sump you can add a 90 and a stub closer to the water line of the sump to keep splashing and bubbles down.

thats the way i have mine tangster, a drain from the top of the fuge to the sump. but at the end of the fuges drain i also have another 90 to make the water flow horizontal into the sumps wall. works just fine. another ideal way to set the fuge is above the main tank.

I can't draw it no program But you drill a Hole in the refugium just low enough from the rim of what will be the fuge to clear the top rim of the sump. Put a bulkhead into the drilled hole then take a pipe over to the sump and down as Reef Guru said you can add a 90 onto the pipe and let the water drain down the inside of the vertical wall of the sump. Then on the inside of the fuge you can add another 90 to go from horizontal at the bulkhead to vertical that will determine the water level with in the fuge. I also have the 90 in the sump like he mentioned to aerate the water a little more
