In the back of the 29 (which is the side now)I will drill a hole and add a bulkhead and plumbing to go to the return section of the 20 simple enough...
actually the fuge does that and it's the 29 gal tank....the 20 long is for the sump only...aka the skimmer and return from the skimmer and fuge.

I have to admit I use this method in both the 29 gal. and 46 gal. tanks and haven't noticed any apprecible temp swings.
I saw a metal rimmed tank on craigslist not to long ago, wish i'd known.....it was cheap.
+1 to the above. Test the TDS of your water supply and if it's your own ro/di filter you may need to change the cartriges. Is all I can think of....
