I don't think I would try to lift it with the sand in there it's going to be very heavy and you may break your tank. I have to do the same thing soon...
I just hope this thread helps someone else who may have some of this carbon on the shelf before they use it.

Hard to get pics of nem he was up frount for the first month or so then moved behind a rock in the back of the tank but he was happy so I let him be....
