Now we are on the same page. Just look at it this way. When it breaks, I want someone else to fix it!

I thought the same thing, but after putting a system together, its really rather basic about what is wrong. Not too hard to problem solve generally

    I'll jump in now..

First of all, props to the Mac talk. ;)

I decided to go with DIY LED because I know how to fix it and as new LED technology comes out I can easily upgrade/swap out necessary components.

Just wanted to clarify a couple of things here

the MH users/ fans , are not in any way indicating that reef tanks cannot be illuminated perfectly adequately with LED lighting ( there is enough proof about to make that mute)

the main focus of the attention of the MH fans is not to offer negatives about LED as a light source for reef tanks
but to challenge any claims they see that may not be supported with scientific based tests

Logan (reefbreeder) is a sponsor and his product is LED
and if he came on here indicating that other products are superior to his product, that would shock me ! because in general smart people (which Logan is) do not do daft things like that

the MH users - will all agree with gcarrol that not all MH set ups are built the same
you need 3 good components, lamps, ballasts and reflectors

The LED users - will agree the same about LEDs - there are good, bad and indifferent choices available

If Logan (anemone) has his unit tested independantly by Sanjay, and it performs well in the testing, that will offer Logan an advantage, and not only an advantage in this debate , but an advantage in general (because if a known and trusted expert is able to verify your claims then that in itself becomes a wonderful advertising tool IMO)

I have really enjoyed this thread, I have been interested and entertained by it

thank you to all the contributors

    Steve

Steve, you summed up this debate very well, it has calmed down considerably, and I think that everyone, including me, learned at least a little bit about lighting, being it LED or mh.

Thanks to you all and Logan of reefbreeders.com for bringing us together.

I'm still trying to figure out which of the participants in this debate do not believe LEDs are a good lighting choice?

Absolutely, for instance, I just added 4 leds to my rapid build, 2 red and 2 greens to complete my spectrum, and it took me about 5 minutes, cost $20 and will last years.

I agree with ya Gcarroll and norg if he chimes in, MH is awesome, but as stated by you, dying as an technology.

My bad, I will get my coat
I did not explain that well enough
it is probably a perception issue on my part
in that I did see some posts that are pro LED , posted only to validate them as their choice of lighting and indicating that they felt they needed to defend that choice

and from that I deducted that they may be thinking some some MH users do not agree with that
