What is this algae

    I noticed this algae growing only in a few spots and I'm curious as to eat it is and what I should do

    That is cyano bacteria. You tank is new and it is a phase that it goes through. Once the tank settles in it should go away or become much less noticeable. Having a sump with cheato in it can help control it as they compete for the same nutrients.

    Is it harmful? Or does it just look nasty

    Most algae isn't actually harmful, it just isn't something people like to look at. The only exception is when it starts to grow on or over corals, as it will block them from getting the light they need.
