Hey guys I am about halfway done with the nitrogen cycle. My ammonia just hit 0, my nitrites are still at around 5 (I am expecting my nitrites to start coming down now) And my nitrates are at about 150+. My question is, should I start to do water changes? If so, how much water and how often? I have a 20 gallon tank. Also, when i do my water changes do I mix the salt and let it dissolve to the right salinity and then put it in, or do I just put in conditioned tap water?

I'd prob do a 5G waterchange, nitrites over 5 can stall a cycle. and 150+ on trates? What testing kit are you using?

But you should mix your salt in your water for at least a few hours, preferable 24 in a container designated just for that purpose. Add a small powerhead and heater to help.

Also, you should consider getting a small RODI unit for your tank, tap water can lead to bad algae problems,as well as others. Good luck;)

I am using an API saltwater liquid test kit.

You might want to retest, take care following the testing instructions,150 nitrates sounds like a mistake. When prepping your water for a water change you could also use a airstone to agitate it if you don't have a spare powerhead. It's best to check your salinity when the water temp is close to being correct which would be the same as your tank.
